These days, cooling technology is where it’s at
Sindelfingen, 25.06.2019. On 26 June 2019, the refrigeration and air conditioning industry will celebrate the first World Refrigeration Day. The industry will use this day to draw attention to its importance. Today, modern life is simply not possible without refrigeration and air conditioning technology.
No fresh bread rolls, no blood reserves in hospitals, no data-processing centre, no mobile communications network – these would be just a few of the consequences if refrigeration and air conditioning technology did not exist. Scarcely imaginable. Many other things in daily life, as we know it, only work reliably and invisibly thanks to refrigeration and air conditioning technology working in the background. Patrick Koops, Head of Public Relations at BITZER in Sindelfingen, states: ‘Our industry is largely unknown to the public. Few people are aware of the immense importance of the products we make. World Refrigeration Day is a good opportunity to put more emphasis on the importance of our industry.’ Not just the supply of food, but also health care, air conditioning in office buildings or special medical applications would not be possible without refrigeration and air conditioning. ‘Hardly anyone knows of another use for refrigeration technology,’ continues Koops. ‘Heat pumps work along the same principle and are a highly environmentally friendly way of heating.’ He is thus also convinced that refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump technology will be playing a major role in the coming transition to sustainable energy. ‘That’s why we at BITZER immediately chose to support World Refrigeration Day,’ adds Koops.
International companies and associations have planned various campaigns to be held on 26 June. The aim is to establish World Refrigeration Day as ‘the coolest day of the year’ from now on. By the way, the date is no coincidence as the physicist William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin, was born in Belfast on 26 June 1824. In 1848, at the age of 24, he developed the thermodynamic temperature scale. Even today, the absolute temperature is still measured in units of Kelvin in his honour.
