Well prepared for high ecological design requirements

• The EU has published minimum efficiency criteria for liquid chillers and condensing units
• The directive comes into force from July 2016

Sindelfingen, 22.07.2015. With its new Ecodesign Regulation, from July 2016 the EU has specified high efficiency requirements for liquid chillers and condensing units, amongst other products. Manufacturers of liquid chillers can even exceed the high efficiency criteria if using BITZER reciprocating, screw and scroll compressors together with corresponding system design. Today, BITZER condensing units already meet the even stricter requirements which will apply from 2018, thus offering certainty when planning both short and long term projects.

On 8th July, the new Ecodesign Regulation No. 2015/1095 was published in the Official Journal of the European Union which, amongst other products, applies for condensing units and liquid chillers for process applications (medium as well as low temperature). This Regulation will come into force on 28th July. This means that the demanding requirements, the so-called "Minimum Efficiency Performance Standards" (MEPS) will apply from 1st July 2016 (Tier-1). In a second phase, the MEPS will then be even stricter from July 2018 (Tier-2). "This Regulation will come into effect soon and present major challenges to the entire sector. Market research has shown that a considerable part of products on offer today do not meet these criteria and may thus no longer be sold in less than one year," said Hermann Renz, BITZER Technical Programs Manager. "But we are well prepared."

Long-term Certainty for Planning
BITZER reciprocating, screw and scroll compressors are characterized by high energy efficiency at full and part load. The innovative technologies used for capacity control contributes to this. When applying these compressors in liquid chillers subject to the Regulation, the efficiency criteria can already be met today and, depending upon system techniques, can even be clearly exceeded.

For decades, BITZER has placed special emphasis on efficiency and environmental protection. Consequently, a complete program of condensing units is available today, covering the full range of capacities which even meet the Tier-2 requirements that will only apply from 2018. Users of BITZER condensing units thus have a high level of certainty in making their plans, even for long-term projects.
