HCFC (R22) phase out according to the Montreal Protocol
For the so-called Article 5 countries special regulations using HCFCs apply.
However those countries still using HCFCs can and should skip the introduction of the HFCs with high GWP as well, and switch directly to low GWP refrigerants and halogen-free substances and processes!
Requirements of the Montreal Protocol:
- Phase down of the available total volume of HCFC gases. The quantity is defined in tons of R12 equivalent.
- Regarding the phase-out requirements, two types of countries are distinguished: Countries that fulfill the requirements of aricle 5 of the Montreal Protocol (Article 5 countries), and countries that are not covered by Article 5 (non Article 5 countries).
- Under certain conditions, Article 5 countries may postpone the conversion for up to 10 years.

Initial value (100%) = HCFC consumption in 1989 + 2.8% of the FC consumption in 1989.
Blue: Article 5 countries.
Green: Non Article 5 countries.
