Refrigerant blends

The new refrigerants will mostly be blends of known and new substances. HFCs (hydro fluoro carbons) are known substances, the new ones include so-called HFOs, i.e. HFC with unsaturated carbon-carbon-bonds. Partly HCs (hydro carbons) will be used in the mixtures.

Most refrigerant mixtures with lower GWP contain components listed in the following table. These listed components are known and tested for compatibility by BITZER. For several refrigerants BITZER can deliver predicted performance data upon request.

Products

For mixtures unlisted in BITZER Software or brochures, the following applies: If components listed in the above table are used in the mixtures only, and the vapour pressure curves are not below that of R134a and not above that of R404A or R407F, the following product ranges of BITZER can be used in field test installations

Application

Many new refrigerant mixtures, targeting replacement of R404A or R22, do have a significant temperature glide of 4 to 7 K or even more, during evaporation and condensation. Depending on the system and heat exchanger design, this can lead to different evaporating and condensation temperatures than with e.g. R404A. Thus the operating conditions of the compressor can change, resulting in need for additional cooling earlier than would expected by the comparison of theoretical data.

Application limits

Application limits for R134a, R404A, R407A, R407F, R448A, R449A, R450A, R513A, R1234yf and R1234ze(E) can be found in the BITZER Software and the corresponding product brochures.

The application limits of R134a can be used as a guideline for refrigerants having similar pressure, if no specific ones are listed. The application limits of R407A can be used as a guideline for refrigerants with similar pressures as R404A or R407F.

Additional limitations can apply due to discharge temperatures at high pressure ratio.

Flammability classification

If the refrigerant material or mixture to be used is listed as flammable – A3, A2 or A2L according to ASHRAE 34, ISO817 resp. EN378-1 – the system installation is to be made safe for the use of flammable refrigerants according to local regulations. For the compressors BITZER strongly recommends to place the motor protection device in the switch cabinet, not in the terminal box, if not otherwise documented.

In the EU a risk assessment according to the ATEX directive might be necessary. The preferred method to comply with regulations is to avoid a flammable concentration by appropriate measures. When planning use of a flammable refrigerant not allowed in the technical documentation, please contact BITZER.

For detailed information concerning the use of the A3 refrigerants R290 and R1270 see Technical Information KT-660.
